New countertops carry more visual weight per square metre than almost anything else in a kitchen, which is why counter replacement is one of the most quoted renovation jobs in Ontario. The work runs in three stages: template, fabricate, install. A fabricator measures the cabinets precisely — usually with a digital template — cuts and polishes the material in their shop, then returns to set the slabs, join seams and cut in the sink and cooktop openings.

Material choice drives everything else. Quartz dominates for its consistency and low upkeep; granite offers natural variation at a similar installed cost; porcelain and solid surface fill specific niches; laminate remains the budget workhorse. Whichever you choose, plumbing disconnection and reconnection around the sink is part of the job — through a licensed plumber where supply or drain lines change — and undermount sinks must be ordered before templating, since the cutout is made to the specific sink.
