Is custom cabinetry worth it over semi-custom or stock?
It depends on the room. A straightforward rectangular kitchen with standard ceiling heights can be served well by semi-custom lines. Custom earns its premium in rooms with awkward dimensions, tall or sloped ceilings, or where you want specific storage — a coffee station, panel-ready appliances, a bank of drawers sized to your cookware. It is also the only route to true made-to-match built-ins elsewhere in the house.
How long do custom cabinets take from order to installation?
Plan for two to four months in total. Measuring and shop drawings take a week or two including your approval, the build and finishing commonly run six to twelve weeks depending on the shop's backlog, and installation itself takes a few days. Order early: the shop timeline can run in parallel with demolition and rough-in work if the renovation is sequenced properly.
What should I look for in a cabinet shop's quote?
Check the construction spec, not just the picture: box material and thickness, drawer construction, hinge and runner brands, and how the finish is applied. Confirm the quote includes shop drawings, delivery and installation, and states the lead time in writing. Ask to see a recent installed job or visit the shop — the quality of edge work and finish on real projects tells you more than a showroom sample.
