Interior Design in Ontario

Interior design on a renovation is a working discipline, not decorating. Every selection — flooring, tile, cabinetry, lighting, hardware, paint — has to be made before the trade that installs it shows up, and each one affects the next. We plan the space first: how rooms flow, where furniture actually sits, where light is needed and where storage earns its keep. Then we build a documented palette of materials and fixtures that suits the house, the budget bracket and the way you live in it.

The difference between a designed renovation and an improvised one shows up on site. When selections are documented early, contractors price accurately, lead times get ordered against the schedule instead of stalling it, and nobody stands in a half-finished kitchen choosing a countertop under pressure. We produce specification sheets a builder can work from directly — model numbers, finishes, dimensions and placement — and we stay available through construction to answer the questions that always come up once walls are open.

We work alongside your contractor or as part of our own design-through-build projects. Either way the goal is the same: a coherent interior where the layout, the light and the materials were decided together, on paper, before money was spent installing them.

Common questions

What is the difference between an interior designer and a decorator?
A decorator works with a finished space — furniture, textiles, art, styling. An interior designer works while the space is still being decided: layouts, lighting circuits, millwork, tile setouts, plumbing fixture positions. On a renovation the drawings change what gets built, so the designer's decisions land before drywall closes. Many projects use both skill sets; ours leans firmly to the design side.
Is interior design worth it on a kitchen or bathroom renovation?
Those are the rooms where it pays back most, because they carry the highest density of decisions per square metre. Cabinet layout, appliance positions, lighting over work zones, tile terminations and fixture heights all interact. Getting them coordinated on paper costs far less than change orders on site, and it is usually the difference between a room that photographs well and one that works daily.
When should the designer get involved?
Before the contractor is booked, ideally. Selections drive rough-in positions — a wall-mounted faucet, an island pendant, a niche in a shower wall all need decisions before plumbing and wiring go in. If design starts after demolition, the schedule forces rushed choices. Brought in early, the designer's documents become part of what contractors bid on, which keeps quotes honest and comparable.
Do you only work with your own contractors?
No. On design-through-build projects our build crew executes the design, which shortens the feedback loop. But we also produce standalone specification packages for homeowners who already have a contractor they trust, and we will do site reviews during their build. What matters is that the documents are complete enough that any competent builder can execute them without guessing.
